![]() ![]() ![]() I'm assuming that I should avoid jacketed bullets.Īny other information, including a rough estimate of it's value (I know that's difficult from pictures) would be great. I don't reload (yet), so after I have the rifle checked out by a gunsmith, I plan on shooting it using factory cowboy action loads with 405 gr lead bullets. Is that because of the changes that were made to the 1873 in 1879 (sights, etc.)? I've heard people refer to these as a "model 1879" version of the 1873 Springfield Trapdoor. The M79 sights are held on with slotless screws. The barrel is stamped with a V, P, some type of symbol, and another P below that. There is a circled P cartouche behind the trigger guard. The serial number is 1700xx, and it has a SWP/1881 cartouched stock with a few bumps and bruises, but no major issues. Eventually, I ended up buying a bunch of ammo AND one of those Trapdoors. The guy with the ammo, also had some Springfield Trapdoor rifles on his table. I found a good deal on some HXP ammo at the last gun show I attended.
